Furnace Curtains are most the most effective heat shields when fabricated using three layers or Plys of high temperature silica fabric. The silica base fabric has an operating temperature of 1800 degrees F and is suitable for use close to an electric arc furnace and also in or near a reheat furnace. The curtain is typically hung off the Mast Arm using angle iron. widths up to 96" can be hung using grommets slipped over 3/8" studs. Wider curtains are best supported by bolting the curtain through 2 pieces of large angle iron.
In some areas adjacent to the EAF Aluminized curtains are hung to protect equipment and controls from the radiant heat. Aluminized fabrics reflect 90% of the radiant heat right up to 3000 degrees F.
Rolling Mill Stand Safety Curtains are an Aluminized Kevlar that hold in place 1/2" diameter rounds that prevent a fall into the equipment while preforming maintenance.
Oscillator Bulkhead Curtains are heat shields fabricated from Panoplia to protect the bulkhead from molten metal breakouts and warping caused by the high heat. The molten steel from a breakout is deflected and prevented from accumulating.
